Does my whole wall need pointing?

Water damage sometimes particularly affects one part of a wall, and the rest is sound.

Two issues to consider:

  • Why does damage happen in specific areas?

  • Can new mortar be colour matched with existing mortar?

  • What happens if I leave an area where mortar has gone?

Why does damage happen in specific areas?

Water drips, flows and splashes. Wherever it goes it shows where it’s been over time. Mortar is designed to fail before a brick or stone fails. Mortar is a lot cheaper than brick or stone.

For mortar to fail before bricks, it needs to be slightly softer than the brick. This failure happens naturally when water regularly affects one place. (And failure happens over decades not quickly).

If damage is left it will continue to deteriorate and a small cost can grow. Also, leaving a repair until more bricks need replacing carries a higher environmental cost.

Gladstone Pointing Limited can repair areas of walls and match to existing mortar. See the blog on mortar colour for more information.
