Personal Profile

Jonathan Gore – lime mortar specialist & owner of Gladstone Pointing

My name is Jonathan Gore, and I am the owner of Gladstone Pointing Limited, a specialist lime repointing company based in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire.

I am trained in the making and use of traditional lime products, with hands‑on instruction from respected experts including Mark Womersley of Womersley’s Limited in West Yorkshire and Terrence Lee of Terrence Lee Conservation, a leading author and practitioner of lime‑based construction in Shropshire. (I have no affiliation with either organisation; I simply value the high‑quality training they provide and their conservation approach).

A background rooted in building and conservation

I am a second‑generation builder. My dad and brother work in timber‑frame construction in north‑west England, and growing up around building sites gave me a deep respect for craftsmanship and traditional materials.

Over time, I became particularly interested in lime as a sustainable, breathable, low‑carbon alternative to modern cement. That interest developed into a specialism, and today I focus exclusively on traditional lime mortar repointing and brick/stone repair.

Experienced in brick, stone and heritage repointing

I have indepth experience repointing:

I also carry out brick and stone replacement, always aiming to repair in a way that preserves the building and saves the customer unnecessary cost. My work is conservation‑led, sympathetic to the original construction, and focused on long‑term durability.

Why Lime Mortar Matters

I believe we are at a crossroads in how we think about sustainability and older buildings. Lime mortar has a far lower carbon footprint than cement, and—crucially—it allows traditional homes to breathe, helping moisture escape naturally. This protects both the building and the people living in it.

At the same time, many older homes are being rendered or sealed in an attempt to improve heat efficiency. While well‑intentioned, this can trap moisture, reduce airflow and create internal damp problems. Historic homes were designed around ventilation, not airtightness. My goal is to help homeowners maintain the appearance, health and heritage value of these buildings while keeping them comfortable and functional for the next generation.

Also, cement-based mortar is too hard to be used with softer older bricks or softer stone and will cause bricks/stone to conduct water, causing damage to masonry. Much repointing of older houses in the 1960s-early 2000s used cement-based mortar, which is leading to increased damage now.

A Local, Community‑Focused Ethos

I live in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, having previously lived and worked in Birmingham and London. I’m originally from north‑west England, and I’ve been married since 2008. My two children have attended West Bridgford Infant School, West Bridgford Junior School and West Bridgford School.
